Bruce Evans 4214fd3688 Avoid depending on a gas bug, so that this file works when assembled
by current versions of gas that don't have the bug as well as by the
RELENG_3 version. A 32-bit load of %esp in 16-bit mode was mangled.
The current version of gas still produces a different object file due
to related (but harmless) bugs involving bogus operand size prefixes
for segment registers.

Bruce Evans ad3dbee7a1 MFC locore.s 1.172-1.174 (don't hide the name of tmpstk, and clear the
bss properly) with adjustments for RELENG_3. The adjustments are the
same as for RELENG_4.

This is part of some making RELENG_3 kernels work when compiled by gcc-3.3.
Fixing bss clearing and ATOMIC_ASM constrains are the only nontrivial parts.

Bruce Evans e81dc82731 MFC (1.24: pass in the constraints on the V parameter so that the char
versions can be given different, non-bogus constraints).

This is part of making some RELENG_3 kernels work when compiled by gcc-3.3.
I started out only wanting them to compile, but had to test them for
delicate changes like this. This change makes no difference for LINT
compiled by the RELENG_3 compiler, except for vfs_cluster.o where it
gives some differences related to register selection near an
atomic_add_char().

Bruce Evans 23047d3472 MFC (1.15: missing FREE()). This was supposed to be MFC'ed in 1.3.2.5,
but FREE was misspelled so this file has just not compiled since 1.3.2.5.

This finishes making LINT compile in RELENG_3.

Bruce Evans f732d57b47 Commented out olpt devices so that LINT is almost compilable in RELENG_3.
olpt devices never worked in RELENG_3, if anywhere, since a driver's
namespace is not affected by changing only the driver's name. LINT
apparently hasn't been buildable in RELENG_3 since rev.1.539.2.14
(between 3.1R and 3.2R).

Bruce Evans 80190b3378 Fixed missing definitions of __dead2, __pure2 and __unused when parts
of RELENG_3 are compiled by gcc-3. These macros are for cosmetic
purposes (optimization and error checking), so they should have been
defined away for all unknown compilers, including for versions of gcc
that were apparently not dreamt of when RELENG_3 was current or stable,
but the ifdefs are too backwards-looking and got this wrong.

RELENG_4 has the same bug for gcc-4.

The corresponding idefs in -current and most other ifdefs for gcc avoid
the bug by assuming that all future versions of gcc will be like gcc-3.

Bruce Evans b6d5c5e83a MFC (1.12: renamed gdb's private strlen and strlcpy to avoid conflicts
with the public ones declared in a system header). This helps unbreak
building RELENG_3 kernels with gcc-3. gcc-2's special (broken) handling
of the corresponding builtins apparently prevented detection of the
conflicts even when the public functions are declared explicitly.

src/sys/netinet6/in6_proto.c rev 1.6.2.4

Prevent denial of service using bogus fragmented IPv4 packets.

A attacker sending a lot of bogus fragmented packets to the target
(with different IPv4 identification field - ip_id), may be able
to put the target machine into mbuf starvation state.

By setting a upper limit on the number of reassembly queues we
  prevent this situation.

This upper limit is controlled by the new sysctl
  net.inet.ip.maxfragpackets which defaults to nmbclusters/4

If you want old behaviour (no upper limit) set this sysctl
  to a negative value.

If you don't want to accept any fragments (not recommended)
set the sysctl to 0 (zero)

Kenneth D. Merry b6a64a9b63 MFC, Add quirk entries from Andre Albsmeier to disable the sync cache
command for the Quantum "MAVERICK 540S" and "LPS525S".

Also, add common string variables, since we seem to have a few Quantum and
Micropolis drives in here.

Fix the 'quantum' variable usage in scsi_all.c that likely got broken when
someone staticized things in cam_xpt.c. (That particular problem would
cause Quantum Fireball ST drives to not get spun up if they were not
already spinning.)

Luigi Rizzo 68fbafd3ee Functional change: in ready_event(), move the call to tranmit_event()
near the end of the function or this might cause the precondition
for the next part of the function to be violated.

mostly harmless).

Kenneth D. Merry db2caf3723 MFC, Fix Bus Device Resets from userland, and specifically from camcontrol.
camcontrol.c:	rev 1.16, 1.17, 1.18
cam_xpt.c:	rev 1.73

The camcontrol and xpt changes switch XPT_RESET_DEV CCBs to be routed
through the pass(4) driver instead of the xpt(4) driver.

Note that this changes the function code for XPT_RESET_DEV. Normally, this
would require a CAM version bump, and thus would break all userland
programs that use the pass/xpt drivers. In this case, however, I'm not
bumping the version number. A version number change is not necessary
because XPT_RESET_DEV CCBs didn't work before.

In any case, if someone tries to use an old version of camcontrol with the
new kernel to reset a particular device, they'll actually see improved
functionality, since they'll just get back an error instead of a hung
machine.

Updating Information for FreeBSD current users
Updating Information for FreeBSD Stable users
This file is maintained by [email protected]. Please send new entries
directly to him. See end of file for further details.
When updating to 4.x-stable from 3.x-stable, please read src/UPDATING
after updating to the new sources for important information.
19990510:
Previously, one would define "NOAOUT" to keep from building
the legacy a.out bits. Now one would define "WANT_AOUT" to
build them.
19990507:
New devstat API requires recompilation of libdevstat, systat,
iostat, vmstat and rpc.rstatd. A new kernel is also required.
make world + building a kernel should do all of this. Any
ports that use devstat need to be recompiled as well.
19990424:
The 'nlpt' driver has changed names to become the 'lpt' driver.
See ppbus(4) or http://www.freebsd.org/~nsouch/ppbus.html
for proper configuration details.
19990209:
New devstat API requires recompilation of libdevstat, systat,
iostat, vmstat and rpc.rstatd. A new kernel is also required.
make world + building a kernel should do all of this. Any
ports that use devstat need to be recompiled as well.
19990125:
Linux threads options has gone away (they are now standard in
the FreeBSD kernel). A recompile of all libkvm using programs
is in order (or better yet a make world).
19990122:
On or about this date there was a small window when the boot
blocks had some minor problems which seemed to force one to
edit /etc/fstab. This has been corrected, if you are seeing this
problem, please rebuild and reinstall your boot blocks.
19990121:
Vinum has changed. The "vinum read" command has changed. For
updates, please see
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=800363+0+current/freebsd-current
for details.
19990120:
Stable branch created. You might want to consider using this
branch. It is tagged with RELENG_3.
19990119:
More work on the syscons driver has been committed. Since
files moved around, you will need to reconfigure your kernel,
and make clean; make depend before rebuilding the kernel. No
config file changes are needed.
19990111:
New keyboard and video card drivers are introduced as the first
stage of console driver reorganization. You are required to
update the kernel configuration file and rebuild the kernel.
kbdcontrol, vidcontrol, and screen savers also need recompilation.
The instruction can be found in
http://www.freebsd.org/~yokota/sc_update.txt
It has notes on splash screen too.
19990106:
Robert Nordier was kind enough to make this page to enable people to
install the new bootblocks:
http://www.freebsd.org/~rnordier/boot.txt
When updating to ELF, make sure that you have updated your
/etc/rc files which have different ldconfig invocations for
elf and aout. Otherwise things like X will stop working with
messages about being unable to find library files. The
mergemaster utility in ports/sysutils/mergemaster helps to
keep critical files like this in sync, and its use is
recommended.
19990104:
Information about ELF day (see 19981230) can be found in
http://www.freebsd.org/~peter/elfday.html
about the upcoming change, its motivations and instructions
for doing the upgrade.
19981230:
You should install new bootblocks now. The ELF kernel will
become default soon. In addition, you'll need to upgrade
your userland programs to ELF before then as well. Use
make aout-to-elf to upgrade your userland programs (old
a.out programs in, for example, /usr/local/bin will
continue to work, even after the upgrade). See src/Makefile
for more details.
19981224:
The old wcd driver has been deleted from the kernel. The
driver that replaces it is named acd. You'll need to change
this in your configuration files.
Failure to do this will result in "ATAPI CD-ROMs not
configured" at boot time.
The floppy tape driver (ft) has been removed from the kernel,
with no replacement driver.
19981202:
New groups from 19981201 commented out of mtree, so they
aren't strictly needed, but still a good idea to have.
19981201:
New user/group added: bind. From src/etc/master.passwd and
src/etc/group:
% grep <newstuff> /usr/src/etc/group
bind:*:53:
% grep <newstuff> /usr/src/etc/master.passwd
tty:*:4:65533::0:0:Tty Sandbox:/:/sbin/nologin
kmem:*:5:65533::0:0:KMem Sandbox:/:/sbin/nologin
bind:*:53:53::0:0:Bind Sandbox:/:/sbin/nologin
19981118:
PAM integrated into the tree. Requires new /etc/pam.conf file
to silence warnings from authentication programs (login, etc).
See src/etc/pam.conf for a sample.
This file contains a list, in reverse chronologocal order, of major
breakages in tracking -stable. Not all things will be listed here,
and it only starts on Novemeber 18, 1998. If you have an earlier
version of FreeBSD, you are on your own to get to November 18, 1998.
Please filter your entries through Warner ([email protected]) so that
the style, formatting, etc of this file can be maintained.

matches the given week day or month. This will not adjust the date
if the given week day or month is the same as the current one.
.Pp
When a date is adjusted to a specific value or in units greater than hours,
daylight savings time considerations are ignored.
Adjustments in units of hours or less honour daylight savings time.
So, assuming the current date is March 26, 0:30 and that the DST adjustment
means that the clock goes forward at 01:00 to 02:00, using
.Fl v No +1H
will adjust the date to March 26, 2:30.
Likewise, if the date is October 29, 0:30 and the DST adjustment means that
the clock goes back at 02:00 to 01:00, using
.Fl v No +3H
will be necessary to reach October 20, 2:30.
.Pp
When the date is adjusted to a specific value that doesn't actually exist
.Pq for example March 26, 1:30 BST 2000 ,
the date will be silently adjusted forwards in units of one hour until it
reaches a valid time.
When the date is adjusted to a specific value that occurs twice
.Pq for example October 29, 1:30 2000 ,
the resulting timezone will be set so that the date matches the earlier of
the two times.
