Enlarge the message out buffer from 6 to 8 bytes. Now that sync and wide
...
negotiation messages may be tagged, we were overrunning the old buffer.
The variable that was getting squashed is updated before the message goes
out, causing corrupted SDTR or WDTR messages. Depending on the phases
traversed before message out, this could cause the wrong offset to be
negotiated allowing data overruns to occur. The problem is easier to
detect with wide targets on the chain since the allowed offset is smaller.
Also removed the unnecessary clearing of SPIORDY during the message out
phase. We don't rely on SPIORDY any more.

Fix an exploitable buffer overflow condition. From l0pht:
...
Modstat is sgid kmem which is really handy to become if you feel like
looking through /dev/mem and /dev/kmem (gee, wonder what you might
want to do that for ). Like just about everything else under the sun
it has a buffer overflow problem. The problem exists in the dostat()
routine where an arbitrary sized string is shoved into sbuf.name
through a strcpy().

[I'm still at COMDEX, but this is an easy commit]
...
David and I talked for quite awhile today about how to differentiate
2.1.6 from the "service patched" 2.1.6, and while the packaging
can and should stay the same, we still need to know version information
in bug reports. I'm therefore bumping the version to 2.1.6.1, though
I hope we won't need to refer to it often as such since the 2.1.6 CD will
be, in fact, 2.1.6.1 and I intend to also replace the FTP release with it.
2.1.6a and 2.1.7 were also debated and rejected. This version number
is the only one we've precedent for (1.1.5.1).

This driver is based on OpenBSD's driver. I modified it to run under FreeBSd

Afterwards, [email protected] (HAMADA Naoki) added EISA support as well as
early support for 3C900 Etherlink XL PCI and 3C905 Fast Etherlink XL PCI.
He also split up the driver in a bus independant and bus dependant parts.
Especially the 3c59X support should be pretty stable now.

I can concentrate on 2.2.

Fixed rather serious bug in the use of pmap_kenter() in kmem_malloc().
...
It's important that pmap_enter() be used here because the pages won't
be removed from the kernel VM when freed otherwise. This would result
in the potential for the wrong page(s) being used if a vm_map_pageable()
was done on this same address space (since no fault would occur, the
previous page(s) would be bogusly used instead). This is almost
certainly yet another cause of wcarchive instabilities.

few edits to this still don't solve the original problem. It appears
that the recursion is *much* worse than we thought - I'm already testing
at 30 levels deep, and it still terminates before finishing the job.
This problaby explains some people's stack overflow problems... :-(

Bring in two small fixes from the head:
...
- Install Makefile.yp as /var/yp/Makefile.dist and only make a link
to it from /var/yp/Makefile if /var/yp/Makefile doesn't already
exist. This way we won't clobber an existing copy of /var/yp/Makefile
which the user may have modified and wants to keep.
- Make the services.byname target generate proper map keys.
This will probably be my last commit to this branch unless the
freeze deadline changes for some reason.

Fixed several serious bugs that had to do with traversing the page
...
queues and inadvertantly stepping off the queue via a page that was
previous removed from it. Also killed the potentially evil RSS limiting
code in the vmdaemon - it traverses allproc which would not be consistent
if the code should block for some reason (it shouldn't block, but we're
not completely sure of that...).

Protect map entry allocations with splimp. This is necessary since malloc

Patch the -stable yppasswdd so that it doesn't try to call getpwnam().
...
The problem with doing this is that getpwnam() will process all the special
inclusion and exclusion lines in /etc/master.passwd, including substitution.
So, for example, if you have a line on your NIS master server that says:
+@disallowed-users:::::::::/etc/nologin
Then yppasswdd will end up with a user record that has /etc/nologin as
a shell. This in turn will get propagated into /var/yp/master.passwd
when an update is performed, and the user's shell will be changed to
/etc/nologin, thus locking them out of the system.
To fix this, yppasswdd now retrieves the user's master.passwd record
directly from ypserv using a call to yp_match(). This bypasses all
the inclusion/exclusion/substitution processing in getpwent(3).
Note that rpc.yppasswdd in FreeBSD-current does not suffer from this
problem: it digs directly into the map database files when searching
for user records, which means it not only bypasses getpwent(3), it
will also work even if your NIS master server isn't set up as an NIS
client. I could have done something similar here, but that would have
meant adding DB interface code which would have been much more complicated.

that there were any noticeable effects due to the bugs...but they're bugs
nonetheless.

Retrofitted much of the substance of the changes in -current, minus some

of the optimizations. Most of this is a rewrite to get rid of the inline
assembly. I've been seeing some very strange page table related panics
on wcarchive with the old code; the current thinking on this is that the
inline assembly in pmap_remove isn't getting along with the gcc code
generator for some reason (possibly due to a bad or missing register
constraint) and in any case the problems seem to disappear with the C
(new) version of this code.

Bugfix based on rev 1.7 of slcompress.c in -current:
...
When cslip gets an uncompressed packet, it attempts to save off the TCP/IP
header for use in decompressing subsequant packets. If cslip gets garbage
(such as what happens when there is a port speed mismatch or modem line
noise), it will occasionally mistake the packet as a valid uncompressed
packet. When it tries to save off the header, it doesn't bother to check
for the validity of the header length and will happily clobber not only
the cslip data structure, but parts of other kernel memory that happens
to follow it...causing, ahem, undesired behavior.

Another round of fixes:
. Replace my NIH-suffering code to detect the number of lines on
the terminal by the curses variable LINES.
. Fix the selection code for countries with more than one screenful
of locations. The very few people living in America/US/Pacific
now won't be charged for Indiana any longer... :)
. Removed the gross code that copied over the timezone file to
/etc/localtime, and create a symlink now instead.
I've also added tzsetup.8 while i was at it.

Brought in change from rev 1.32:
...
Change v_usecount & v_writecount from a short to an int. As shorts they
can and will overflow on large machines - especially on machines with
filesystems with lots of files (like netnews servers), and the result
is a "free vnode isn't" panic or worse.
This fixes one of the causes of these panics that I've been experiancing on

Retrofitted changes to add NO_SWAPPING option from -current (actually, it's

the other way around - the changes in -current were based on these).
The NO_SWAPPING option disables U-area paging (struct user & kernel stack)
and can help improve performance in some special circumstances where a

often in short waits (< 1 minute) but wake up frequently. Such is the
case on a busy FTP archive like wcarchive. This option does not affect
generic VM system paging.

Add Mark Murray's md5 recognition ($1$) into the libdescrypt library.
...
This is a "trivial" change - if it is presented with a "$1$ salt (which
is illegal for the DES crypt), it switches to the md5 routine instead.
If it never sees a MD5 string, it behaves exactly as before.
This will be a lifesaver for people who install from cdrom, add users or
set passwords, then go and select the "secure" dist from the ftp server
and would have locked themselves out of their machine.
Some -Wall cleanups came along with it.
