parisc: unwind: Replace open-coded binary search with bsearch()
There is a bug in the binary search where hi can underflow. If addr is less than the first entry, then "hi = mid - 1" will underflow to ULONG_MAX. Then we have an out-of-bounds read. Replace the open-coded binary search with bsearch(). Issue found by an LLM. Signed-off-by: Sean Young <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <[email protected]> |

fail, eliminating the need for complex and error-prone caller-side
cleanup code
- "Keep tail page private zero at free and folio split" (Zi Yan)
Add checks to ensure tail_page->private is zero when freeing compound
or high-order pages and when promoting tail pages during large folio
splits. By validating these fields at free and split time, it allows
the removal of redundant private field clearing inside
prep_compound_tail()
- "mm: drop redundant lru_add_drain in anon folio reuse paths" (Barry
Song)
Eliminate redundant lru_add_drain() calls in
wp_can_reuse_anon_folio() and do_swap_page() to reduce LRU lock
contention and system overhead
By validating folio refcounts against the LRU cache before draining
and removing unnecessary drains in the swap path, it achieves up to a
30.5% reduction in drain calls during heavy swap workloads
- "mm: clean up folio LRU and swap declarations" (Jianyue Wu)
Reorganize folio LRU and swap code by relocating page-cluster state
to mm/swap_state.c, renaming mm/swap.c to mm/folio.c, and moving
MM-internal reclaim declarations into mm/internal.h.
- "userfaultfd: working set tracking for VM guest memory" (Kiryl
Shutsemau)
Add userfaultfd support for tracking the working set of VM guest
memory, so a VMM can identify hot pages and reclaim cold ones to
tiered or remote storage
- "mm: remove CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE (Part 2)" (David
Hildenbrand)
Remove the remaining pieces of CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE,
performing some smaller cleanups around freeing of reserved vmemmap
pages on the way.
- "mm/damon: update probe hits for runtime parameter commits" (SJ Park)
Ensure that DAMON's probe_hits attribute counter is properly updated
when monitoring intervals are changed at runtime, matching the
behavior of nr_accesses. To achieve this, it refactors and renames
existing helper functions for shared use, applies the updates to
probe_hits, and handles edge cases in damon_probe_hits_mvsum() to
maintain measurement accuracy.
- "KSM: performance optimizations for rmap_walk_ksm" (xu xin)
Resolve a severe KSM reverse-mapping performance bottleneck where
thousands of split VMAs sharing a single anon_vma cause extended lock
contention.
By adding an interval-filtering check during the rmap walk, it
reduces worst-case anon_vma lock hold times from over 500ms down to
under 2ms, preventing application freezes and latency spikes under
memory pressure.
- "mm: split a couple of headers from internal.h" (Mike Rapoport)
Split declarations related to mm_init, memblock, vmalloc and sparse
into new headers
- "KSM: use linear_page_index in collect_procs_ksm()" (xu xin)
Apply the interval tree optimization from rmap_walk_ksm() to
collect_procs_ksm() to avoid iterating over non-matching VMAs during
KSM memory error handling.
It hoists loop-invariant address initialization and restricts the
anon_vma_interval_tree_foreach walk to a targeted page offset range,
reducing redundant checks and improving lookup efficiency.
- "selftests/mm: avoid false failures in hugetlb and KSM tests" (Sayali
Patil)
Fix issues in the hugetlb and KSM MM selftest categories that can
report failures when the prerequisites for the tests are not
satisfied
- "mm/damon: introduce data attributes only monitoring" (SJ Park)
Introduce attribute-weighted region management in DAMON, allowing
users to prioritize specific data attributes (such as page sizes or
cgroups) over or instead of access monitoring.
By assigning weights to attribute probes, DAMON can completely
disable access tracking and adjust monitoring regions based on
weighted probe-hit counters to optimize monitoring quality for
attribute-focused workloads.
- "mm/hmm: Add mmap lock-drop support for userfaultfd-backed mappings"
(Stanislav Kinsburskii)
Extend hmm_range_fault() to support userfaultfd-backed regions by
allowing the mmap lock to be dropped during fault handling via a new
hmm_range_fault_locked() helper.
By accepting a locked pointer and signaling retry status when lock
release occurs, it enables page fault resolution in userfaultfd
regions while preserving backward compatibility for existing callers.
- "mm: make VMA page offset handling more consistent" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
Clean up and standardize how vma->vm_pgoff is accessed and
manipulated across file-backed and anonymous mappings in the kernel
It introduces dedicated helper functions such as vma_start_pgoff(),
vma_end_pgoff(), vma_set_pgoff() and linear_page_delta() while
renaming rmap interval tree helpers to better reflect their
functionality.
These changes establish a cleaner foundation for future work that
will unify virtual page offset indexing for all anonymous and CoW'd
folios.
- "mm: handle device-private PMDs in walk callbacks" (Usama Arif)
Address kernel panics and state corruption caused by MM walk
callbacks reaching non-present device-private PMD swap entries
created during HMM migrations
It ensures that functions which acquire pmd_trans_huge_lock()
properly recognize device-private PMDs instead of assuming a present
THP or a standard migration entry.
- "mm/rmap: Refactor try_to_unmap_one" (Dev Jain)
Refactor try_to_unmap_one by modularizing Hugetlb,
anonymous-lazyfree, and anonymous-swapbacked logic into dedicated
functions, laying the structural groundwork for batched anonymous
large folio unmapping.
- "Docs/ABI/damon: sysfs ABI document fixes and additions" (Song Hu)
Fix typos and fills in missing entries in the DAMON sysfs ABI
document
- "dax/kmem: atomic whole-device hotplug via sysfs" (Gregory Price)
Introduce an atomic sysfs state attribute and supporting DAX/MM
infrastructure to prevent userland races when offlining and removing
entire memory regions
By adding an unplugged state alongside standard online modes, it
enables whole-device atomic hotplug control while preserving backward
compatibility.
- "mm: convert more vm_flags_t users to vma_flags_t" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
Continue transitioning the kernel from the deprecated vm_flags_t type
to vma_flags_t across core memory management infrastructure.
It replaces legacy type usage in core functions such as do_mmap(),
unmapped area allocation, mm->def_vma_flags, and VMA operations like
mlock, mprotect, and mremap.
- "Two small patches to clean up mm/mm_slot.h" (xu xin)
Refactor mm_slot.h by introducing mm_slot_remove() to unify duplicate
slot deletion sequences in khugepaged and KSM. It also adds code
documentation explaining why mm_slot_lookup and mm_slot_insert must
remain as preprocessor macros rather than static inline functions.
- "mm/damon/core: hide core-private struct fields" (SJ Park)
Clean up DAMON core structures by consistently marking internal-only
fields with private: comment tags to prevent improper direct access
from outer layers.
It enforces encapsulation across core structures including
damon_region, damon_target, and damon_ctx and updates DAMON_SYSFS to
interact through approved access APIs instead of exposing raw struct
members.
- "mm/damon: unurgent fixes for infinite loop, NULL de-ref and races"
(SJ Park)
Address potential infinite loops, NULL dereferences, and race
conditions identified in DAMON
It fixes an infinite loop triggered by extreme user configurations, a
NULL pointer dereference within unit tests and minor monitoring
accuracy degradation caused by subtle runtime races.
- "mm/page_alloc: fixes for free_pages_nolock() on RT/UP" (Brendan
Jackman)
Fix an NMI safety flaw in __free_frozen_pages() where freeing pages
on non-SMP or PREEMPT_RT kernels can bypass can_spin_trylock() checks
via non-PCP or isolated migration paths.
It also resolves potential kernel crashes and privilege escalation
risks triggered when BPF tracing runs in NMI context alongside memory
hotplug or large allocation frees.
- "mm/page_alloc: couple of followups for recent cleanups" (Brendan
Jackman)
Clean up and update page allocator nomenclature, documentation, and
debug assertions.
It aligns internal FPI_ flags with the public "nolock" naming
convention, removes outdated internal implementation details from
high-level page allocator comments, and eliminates obsolete
VM_BUG_ON() assertions in allocation paths.
- "mm/mseal: further cleanups" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
Refactor and simplify the mseal implementation by clarifying API
boundaries and removing unnecessary code complexity.
It replaces generic do_mseal() usage outside the syscall with a
dedicated mseal_mmap_page_zero() helper for MMAP_PAGE_ZERO,
eliminates mm_struct parameters to enforce that sealing applies only
to current->mm, and streamlines overall logic and comments with no
functional changes intended.
- "mm/vmscan: fix swappiness=max and clean up per-node proactive
reclaim" (Ridong Chen)
Resolve reclaim behavior bugs and clean up function parameters across
memory reclaim paths
It fixes swappiness=max in both standard reclaim and MGLRU so
unswappable anonymous memory no longer falls back to evicting page
cache, ensures reclaim_store() returns accurate error codes instead
of collapsing all failures into -EAGAIN, and removes the obsolete
gfp_mask parameter from __node_reclaim().
- "mm: mincore: misc cleanups" (Kefeng Wang)
Clean up and simplifies the mincore code. Most importantly, it
removes the historical special behavior that always reports VM_PFNMAP
pages as non-resident.
- "mm/huge_memory: drop dead split helper variants" (Kiryl Shutsemau)
Two trivial cleanups in the folio split API
- "mm/damon: fix uninitialized DAMOS field and kunit exec expectation
bugs" (SJ Park)
Resolve minor operational and testing bugs in DAMON identified by
Sashiko. It initializes the damos->last_applied field to prevent
occasional efficiency degradation and fixes invalid memory accesses
in DAMON KUnit tests during test failure handling.
- "cleanup for stable_page_flags()" (Jinjiang Tu)
Clean up and refactor stable_page_flags() used by /proc/kpageflags
without altering functionality.
It uses BIT_ULL() to prevent shift-overflow warnings on 64-bit flag
bits, converts folio-specific flag checks to standard folio_test_*()
helpers, and removes redundant CONFIG_PAGE_IDLE_FLAG handling.
- "Batch unmap of uffd-wp file folios" (Dev Jain)
Extend batched folio unmapping support to file folios within
userfaultfd write-protect (uffd-wp) VMAs by adding batching
capabilities to pte_install_uffd_wp_if_needed().
This removes special-case restrictions on uffd-wp VMAs in
try_to_unmap_one(), significantly simplifying the function's control
flow and complexity.
- "mm/early_ioremap: clarify and clean up early_ioremap_reset()"
(Sang-Heon Jeon)
Clarify and clean up the architecture-specific usage of
__late_set_fixmap() and __late_clear_fixmap() after
early_ioremap_reset()
It adds explicit documentation regarding when early_ioremap_reset()
must be called and removes redundant macro definitions and reset
calls in the RISC-V and ARM64 architectures.
- "mm: fix reclaim storms in defrag_mode" (Johannes Weiner)
Address severe performance regressions, swap storms, and spurious
OOMs caused by vm.defrag_mode=1 under high memory pressure in Meta
production
It updates the page allocator slowpath so non-movable allocation
requests actively trigger direct reclaim and direct compaction at
pageblock_order scale, allowing them to claim whole pageblocks rather
than spinning unproductively.
- "zram: lockmap tweaks" (Sebastian Siewior)
Optimize and fix lockdep tracking for zram devices by consolidating
per-entry lockmaps and isolate lock classes across multiple instances
This reduces memory overhead by replacing per-entry lockdep_map
instances with a single map per struct zram, and assigns a dynamic
lock_class_key to each instance to prevent false deadlock reports
when different zram devices are backed by distinct filesystems.

Merge tag 'core-entry-2026-08-17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull generic entry code updates from Thomas Gleixner: - Make syscall user dispatching configurable Not all architectures can makes use of syscall user dispatching. Allow them to disable the feature completely. - Consolidate stack randomization for the generic entry code and the architectures using it. Stack randomization on syscall entry was sprinkled throughout the architecture specific low level entry code and in some cases at the wrong points, e.g. before establishing state, which violates the non-instrumentable constraints of that code. Clean this up by integrating stack randomization into the generic entry code helpers so that it is invoked at the earliest possible point right after establishing state and converting all generic entry code using architecture over. - Clean up the syscall number handling in the generic entry code. It works correctly for architectures which have a separate return value storage in pt_regs, but fails to distinguish the case where user space handed in -1 as syscall number from the case where the entry code rejects it by returning -1 to the callers. Aside of that the return value functionality of those interfaces is not really intuitive. Fix this by separating the decision to reject a syscall (user dispatch, ptrace, seccomp ...) from the potential modification of the syscall number through these mechanisms. This solves most of the problems for architectures which do not have a separate return value storage in pt_regs except for the case where a tracepoint has a BPF script or a probe attached which overwrite both the syscall number and the return value. But that's a problem which cannot be solved in the generic code, that only can be addressed by separating the storage model in the affected architectures. * tag 'core-entry-2026-08-17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (23 commits) entry, treewide: Make syscall_enter_from_user_mode[_work]() indicate syscall execution entry: Make return type of syscall_trace_enter() bool entry: Rework trace_syscall_enter() entry: Rework syscall_audit_enter() syscall_user_dispatch: Introduce ARCH_SUPPORTS_SYSCALL_USER_DISPATCH entry: Fix seccomp bypass after ptrace with TSYNC x86/entry: Simplify the syscall number logic x86/entry: Get rid of the sys_ni_syscall() indirection x86/entry: Make syscall functions static ptrace, treewide: Rename ptrace_report_syscall_entry() to ptrace_report_syscall_permit_entry() seccomp, treewide: Rename and convert __secure_computing() to return boolean entry: Use syscall number instead of rereading it entry: Remove syscall_enter_from_user_mode() x86/syscall: Use [syscall_]enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() s390/syscall: Use enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() riscv/syscall: Use syscall_enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() powerpc/syscall: Use syscall_enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() loongarch/syscall: Use syscall_enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() entry: Provide [syscall_]enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() randomize_kstack: Provide add_random_kstack_offset_irqsoff() ... |

mm/rmap: rename vma_interval_tree_*() to mapping_rmap_tree_*()
The family of vma_interval_tree_() functions manipulate the address_space (which, of course, is generally referred to as 'mapping') reverse mapping, but are named the 'VMA' interval tree. VMAs may be mapped by an anon_vma, an address_space, or both. Therefore calling the mapping interval tree a 'VMA' interval tree is rather confusing. This is also inconsistent with the anon_vma_interval_tree_*() functions which explicitly reference the rmap object to which they pertain. Rename the vma_interval_tree_*() functions to mapping_rmap_tree_*() to correct this. We will rename the anon rmap functions similarly in a subsequent patch. No functional change intended. mm/rmap: parameterise vma_interval_tree_*() by address_space
The file-backed mapping interval tree functions vma_interval_tree_*() accept a raw rb_root_cached pointer to determine the tree in which they are operating. However, in each case, this is always associated with an address_space data type. So simply pass a pointer to that instead to simplify the code, and more clearly differentiate between these operations and those concerning anonymous mappings. While we're here, make the generated interval tree functions static as they do not need to be used externally (any previously existing external users have now been removed). We also rename VMA parameters from 'node' to 'vma' as calling this a node is simply confusing, update the input index types to pgoff_t since they reference page offsets and rename the parameters to pgoff_start and pgoff_last. No functional change intended. ptrace, treewide: Rename ptrace_report_syscall_entry() to ptrace_report_syscall_permit_entry()

seccomp, treewide: Rename and convert __secure_computing() to return boolean
The return value of __secure_computing() currently uses 0 to indicate that a system call should be allowed, and -1 to indicate that it should be blocked/killed. This 0/-1 pattern is non-intuitive for a security check function and makes the control flow at the call sites less readable. Furthermore, any potential future changes to these return values would require a high-risk, error-prone audit of all its users across different architectures. Sanitize this logic by converting the return type of __secure_computing() to a proper boolean, where 'true' explicitly means 'allow' and 'false' means 'fail/deny'. Update all the two dozen or so call sites across the tree to align with this new boolean semantic. No functional changes are intended, as the callers still return -1 to the lower-level assembly entry code upon seccomp denial. Rename the function to __seccomp_permit_syscall() so that the purpose is entirely clear. parisc: Remove unnecessary NULL check of the kstat_irqs field
The kstat_irqs field of struct irq_desc is used to store a per-cpu count of interrupt events. It is initialized in init_desc(), along with all the other fields in struct irq_desc that need explicit initialization, and therefore it's always available (non-NULL) for any valid interrupt descriptor. On parisc, CONFIG_SPARSE_IRQ is disabled, interrupt descriptors are allocated statically in the irq_desc[] array, and kstat_irqs is initialized implicitly to NULL. The kstat_irqs field is initialized later, for all descriptors, via start_kernel() -> early_irq_init() -> init_desc(). smp_boot_one_cpu() is used only for CPU hotplugging. On a SMP system, the boot CPU initializes the interrupt descriptors as described above, and smp_boot_one_cpu() is called later, for the secondary CPU(s). A previous change made similar changes across the generic interrupt code in kernel/irq/irqdesc.c, and provides a more detailed explanation of why kstat_irqs is guaranteed to be non-NULL. - Enable AtomicOps only if we know the Root Port supports them (Gerd
Bayer)
- Don't enable AtomicOps for RCiEPs since none of them need Atomic
Ops and we can't tell whether the Root Complex would support them
(Gerd Bayer)
- Leave Precision Time Measurement disabled until a driver enables it
to avoid PCIe errors (Mika Westerberg)
- Make pci_set_vga_state() fail if bridge doesn't support VGA
routing, i.e., PCI_BRIDGE_CTL_VGA is not writable, and return
errors to vga_get() callers including userspace via
/dev/vga_arbiter (Simon Richter)
- Validate max-link-speed from DT in j721e, brcmstb, mediatek-gen3,
rzg3s drivers (where the actual controller constraints are known),
and remove validation from the generic OF DT accessor (Hans Zhang)
- Remove pc110pad driver (no longer useful after 486 CPU support
removed) and no_pci_devices() (pc110pad was the last user) (Dmitry
Torokhov, Heiner Kallweit)
Resource management:
- Prevent assigning space to unimplemented bridge windows; previously
we mistakenly assumed prefetchable window existed and assigned
space and put a BAR there (Ahmed Naseef)
- Avoid shrinking bridge windows to fit in the initial Root Port
window; fixes one problem with devices with large BARs connected
via switches, e.g., Thunderbolt (Ilpo Järvinen)
- Pass full extent of empty space, not just the aligned space, to
resource_alignf callback so free space before the requested
alignment can be used (Ilpo Järvinen)
- Place small resources before larger ones for better utilization of
address space (Ilpo Järvinen)
- Fix alignment calculation for resource size larger than align,
e.g., bridge windows larger than the 1MB required alignment (Ilpo
Järvinen)
Reset:
- Update slot handling so all ARI functions are treated as being in
the same slot. They're all reset by Secondary Bus Reset, but
previously drivers of ARI functions that appeared to be on a
non-zero device weren't notified and fatal hardware errors could
result (Keith Busch)
- Make sysfs reset_subordinate hotplug safe to avoid spurious hotplug
events (Keith Busch)
- Hide Secondary Bus Reset ('bus') from sysfs reset_methods if masked
by CXL because it has no effect (Vidya Sagar)
- Avoid FLR for AMD NPU device, where it causes the device to hang
(Lizhi Hou)
Error handling:
- Clear only error bits in PCIe Device Status to avoid accidentally
clearing Emergency Power Reduction Detected (Shuai Xue)
- Check for AER errors even in devices without drivers (Lukas Wunner)
- Initialize ratelimit info so DPC and EDR paths log AER error
information (Kuppuswamy Sathyanarayanan)
Power control:
- Add UPD720201/UPD720202 USB 3.0 xHCI Host Controller .compatible so
generic pwrctrl driver can control it (Neil Armstrong)
Hotplug:
- Set LED_HW_PLUGGABLE for NPEM hotplug-capable ports so LED core
doesn't complain when setting brightness fails because the endpoint
is gone (Richard Cheng)
Peer-to-peer DMA:
- Allow wildcards in list of host bridges that support peer-to-peer
DMA between hierarchy domains and add all Google SoCs (Jacob
Moroni)
Endpoint framework:
- Advertise dynamic inbound mapping support in pci-epf-test and
update host pci_endpoint_test to skip doorbell testing if not
advertised by endpoint (Koichiro Den)
- Return 0, not remaining timeout, when MHI eDMA ops complete so
mhi_ep_ring_add_element() doesn't interpret non-zero as failure
(Daniel Hodges)
- Remove vntb and ntb duplicate resource teardown that leads to oops
when .allow_link() fails or .drop_link() is called (Koichiro Den)
- Disable vntb delayed work before clearing BAR mappings and
doorbells to avoid oops caused by doing the work after resources
have been torn down (Koichiro Den)
- Add a way to describe reserved subregions within BARs, e.g.,
platform-owned fixed register windows, and use it for the RK3588
BAR4 DMA ctrl window (Koichiro Den)
- Add BAR_DISABLED for BARs that will never be available to an EPF
driver, and change some BAR_RESERVED annotations to BAR_DISABLED
(Niklas Cassel)
- Add NTB .get_dma_dev() callback for cases where DMA API requires a
different device, e.g., vNTB devices (Koichiro Den)
- Add reserved region types for MSI-X Table and PBA so Endpoint
controllers can them as describe hardware-owned regions in a
BAR_RESERVED BAR (Manikanta Maddireddy)
- Make Tegra194/234 BAR0 programmable and remove 1MB size limit

Merge tag 'timers-core-2026-04-12' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull timer core updates from Thomas Gleixner:
- A rework of the hrtimer subsystem to reduce the overhead for
frequently armed timers, especially the hrtick scheduler timer:
- Better timer locality decision
- Simplification of the evaluation of the first expiry time by
keeping track of the neighbor timers in the RB-tree by providing
a RB-tree variant with neighbor links. That avoids walking the
RB-tree on removal to find the next expiry time, but even more
important allows to quickly evaluate whether a timer which is
rearmed changes the position in the RB-tree with the modified
expiry time or not. If not, the dequeue/enqueue sequence which
both can end up in rebalancing can be completely avoided.
- Deferred reprogramming of the underlying clock event device. This
optimizes for the situation where a hrtimer callback sets the
need resched bit. In that case the code attempts to defer the
re-programming of the clock event device up to the point where
the scheduler has picked the next task and has the next hrtick
timer armed. In case that there is no immediate reschedule or
soft interrupts have to be handled before reaching the reschedule
point in the interrupt entry code the clock event is reprogrammed
in one of those code paths to prevent that the timer becomes
stale.
- Support for clocksource coupled clockevents
The TSC deadline timer is coupled to the TSC. The next event is
programmed in TSC time. Currently this is done by converting the
CLOCK_MONOTONIC based expiry value into a relative timeout,
converting it into TSC ticks, reading the TSC adding the delta
ticks and writing the deadline MSR.
As the timekeeping core has the conversion factors for the TSC
already, the whole back and forth conversion can be completely
avoided. The timekeeping core calculates the reverse conversion
factors from nanoseconds to TSC ticks and utilizes the base
timestamps of TSC and CLOCK_MONOTONIC which are updated once per
tick. This allows a direct conversion into the TSC deadline value
without reading the time and as a bonus keeps the deadline
conversion in sync with the TSC conversion factors, which are
updated by adjtimex() on systems with NTP/PTP enabled.
- Allow inlining of the clocksource read and clockevent write
functions when they are tiny enough, e.g. on x86 RDTSC and WRMSR.
With all those enhancements in place a hrtick enabled scheduler
provides the same performance as without hrtick. But also other
hrtimer users obviously benefit from these optimizations.
- Robustness improvements and cleanups of historical sins in the
hrtimer and timekeeping code.
- Rewrite of the clocksource watchdog.
The clocksource watchdog code has over time reached the state of an
impenetrable maze of duct tape and staples. The original design,
which was made in the context of systems far smaller than today, is
based on the assumption that the to be monitored clocksource (TSC)
can be trivially compared against a known to be stable clocksource
(HPET/ACPI-PM timer).
Over the years this rather naive approach turned out to have major
flaws. Long delays between the watchdog invocations can cause wrap
arounds of the reference clocksource. The access to the reference
clocksource degrades on large multi-sockets systems dure to
interconnect congestion. This has been addressed with various
heuristics which degraded the accuracy of the watchdog to the point
that it fails to detect actual TSC problems on older hardware which
exposes slow inter CPU drifts due to firmware manipulating the TSC to
hide SMI time.
The rewrite addresses this by:
- Restricting the validation against the reference clocksource to
the boot CPU which is usually closest to the legacy block which
contains the reference clocksource (HPET/ACPI-PM).
- Do a round robin validation betwen the boot CPU and the other
CPUs based only on the TSC with an algorithm similar to the TSC
synchronization code during CPU hotplug.
- Being more leniant versus remote timeouts
- The usual tiny fixes, cleanups and enhancements all over the place

mm: change to return bool for ptep_clear_flush_young()/clear_flush_young_ptes()
The ptep_clear_flush_young() and clear_flush_young_ptes() are used to clear the young flag and flush the TLB, returning whether the young flag was set. Change the return type to bool to make the intention clearer. PCI: Align head space better
When a bridge window contains big and small resource(s), the small resource(s) may not amount to the half of the size of the big resource which would allow calculate_head_align() to shrink the head alignment. This results in always placing the small resource(s) after the big resource. In general, it would be good to be able to place the small resource(s) before the big resource to achieve better utilization of the address space. In the cases where the large resource can only fit at the end of the window, it is even required. However, carrying the information over from pbus_size_mem() and calculate_head_align() to __pci_assign_resource() and pcibios_align_resource() is not easy with the current data structures. A somewhat hacky way to move the non-aligning tail part to the head is possible within pcibios_align_resource(). The free space between the start of the free space span and the aligned start address can be compared with the non-aligning remainder of the size. If the free space is larger than the remainder, placing the remainder before the start address is possible. This relocation should generally work, because PCI resources consist only power-of-2 atoms. Various arch requirements may still need to override the relocation, so the relocation is only applied selectively in such cases. fs: fix archiecture-specific compat_ftruncate64
The "small" argument to do_sys_ftruncate indicates if > 32-bit size should be reject, but all the arch-specific compat ftruncate64 implementations get this wrong. Merge do_sys_ftruncate and ksys_ftruncate, replace the integer as boolean small flag with a descriptive one about LFS semantics, and use it correctly in the architecture-specific ftruncate64 implementations. parisc: Fix initial page table creation for boot
The KERNEL_INITIAL_ORDER value defines the initial size (usually 32 or 64 MB) of the page table during bootup. Up until now the whole area was initialized with PTE entries, but there was no check if we filled too many entries. Change the code to fill up with so many entries that the "_end" symbol can be reached by the kernel, but not more entries than actually fit into the initial PTE tables. parisc: Check kernel mapping earlier at bootup
The check if the initial mapping is sufficient needs to happen much earlier during bootup. Move this test directly to the start_parisc() function and use native PDC iodc functions to print the warning, because panic() and printk() are not functional yet. This fixes boot when enabling various KALLSYSMS options which need much more space. Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]> # v6.0+ |

Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argument
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar types
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <[email protected]> |

Provide a new syscall which has the only purpose to yield the CPU after the kernel granted a time slice extension. sched_yield() is not suitable for that because it unconditionally schedules, but the end of the time slice extension is not required to schedule when the task was already preempted. Pull parisc architecture updates from Helge Deller:
"A fix which allows booting on the very old 710 workstations, and two
fixes in the syscall entry/exit path which allow to execute 64-bit
userspace binaries.
